World Goth Day originally started in the UK. BBC 6 was looking at a number of music subcultures on May 22nd 2009, two goth DJs got together DJ Cruel Britannia and Martin OldGoth and organised an event. It was decided that May 22nd would be the day when this event would be held regularly.
The tradition continued and spread outside the UK.
World Goth Day celebrates the sub cultural aspects of the Goth subculture, including fashion, music and art. Many of the events feature local Goth bands, and some have taken on a charity aspect, supporting the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, a charity that combat and prejudice and hatred against members of subcultures.
The event has seen celebrations all around the world, including in Australia, the UK, the US, Singapore, South Africa.

I stumbled upon your blog, and I just want to say that I like it :)
I have always wanted to know the history of different styles from different era.
Funny thing is only about four people in the UK give a hoot about World Goth Day.
Why do we need a World Goth Day?
Every day is Gothic.
Thank you Karla@
There was a few people chatting about it in Melbourne, and there were two events held for it..... but its not about to compete with Christmas I think! :-)
I know a number of UK people who organized, supported and went to the World Goth Events in the UK. The Melbourne event at DV8 had a small crowd but it was a good night and money was raised towards the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. Being a goth why not have an official day to celebrate with your friends.
HI,
I wanted to contact you regarding a possible promotion opportunity. do you have an email address where I can message you with details?
Thank you Karla!
I agree Miss Fade To Black....we need an official day to celebrate our gothness. I hope it gets more support in the future.
